2010 in Theater-Related Parodies: Month by Month

These are not necessarily my most-watched YouTubes, but my favorite stories in those months (based on when the subject actually caught me for better or worse, rather than when we actually did the video).

Recurring themes (two videos each) are four subjects of adoration –  Stephen Sondheim, Kristin Chenoweth, Al Pacino, and Elaine Stritch – and also the Sarah Palin/Tea Party thing.  Rounding out the list are Addams Family and D.C.'s Oklahoma phenomenon.

Quick summary (details and links further down)
January – those full-body airline scanners (Come Fly Away tribute)
February – Kristin & those added Promises Promises songs
March – Palin and the tea party and the coffee party
April – Addams Family feat. John & Abigail Adams
May –  Stritch, based on a loving parody take on her Night Music negotiations
June –  Al Pacino and Merchant of Venice in Central Park
July – Stritch again, coping as she strives to be the very best she can!
August – Kristin again, another affectionate look at Promises Promises
September – Henry Miller Theater becomes the Sondheim!
October – Al Pacino and Merchant again, this time a Broadway phenomenon
November –Oklahoma puts D.C.’s Arena Stage on the map again!
December – Palins, tea party & D.C. power shift to Sondheim's Chrysanthemum Tea

JANUARY 2010 – FLY ME IN THE NUDE – THE FULL-BODY AIRLINE SCANNERS START APPEARING
Parody of “Fly Me to the Moon” in honor of the Tharp-Sinatra COME FLY AWAY

FEBRUARY 2010 – ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ADDITION OF “I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER” TO PROMISES PROMISES SOMEHOW SEEMED MOST IMPORTANT TO US IN TERMS OF THEATER PARODY
Affectionate Kristin parody, of “I Say A Little Prayer”

MARCH 2010 – NOT TECHNICALLY THEATER, JUST TANGENTIALLY, BUT CARLY SIMON IS LUCY SIMON’S SISTER AFTER ALL-
Parody of “You’re So Vain” about Sarah  Palin, the Tea Party and the Coffee Party

APRIL 2010 – EVERYONE WAS DOING ADDAMS FAMILY THEME SONG PARODIES
So we did the John and Abigail Adams Family Theme, which assumes a working knowledge of the cast album of “1776”

MAY 2010 – THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ELAINE STRITCH HAD CERTAIN “REQUIREMENTS” TO APPEAR IN A LTTLE NIGHT MUSIC prompted some humorous looks online at what those might be.  My favorite was one by a very funny fellow named “Royboy” on All That Chat, so:
With real love for Ms. Stritch, we did a low-tech take on one of those silly hypothetical lists of supposed demands

JUNE 2010 – FREE SHAKESPEARE WITH AL – Al Pacino in Merchant of Venice, at that time for FREE, as people line up in Central Park, a parody of FOR ME AND MY GAL

JULY 2010 – CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THE GREAT ELAINE STRITCH, so we wondered (to a parody of ZIP! called SIT!)  how she copes sitting for eight performances a week, three hours at a clip – as she strives to be the very best Mme. Armfeldt ever

AUGUST 2010 – SPECULATION OF WHO MIGHT REPLACE SEAN HAYES & KRISTIN CHENOWETH in “PROMISES PROMISES” was big chat fodder.  In the end, they decided to close in January when their contracts ran out
KNOWING WHEN TO CLOSE, another affectionate Kristin parody, this time of KNOWING WHEN TO LEAVE

SEPTEMBER 2010 – As the Henry Miller Theatre is re-named for the great Stephen Sondheim, we speculate on Henry Miller’s ghost reconciling himself with the name change
LOSING MY SIGN, parody of LOSING MY MIND from FOLLIES

OCTOBER 2010 – Al Pacino’s transfer to Broadway was big box office, so we imagine the producers trying to get him to extend
SHYLOCK, a parody of SKYLARK and the 2010-11 production of MERCHANT OF VENICE

NOVEMBER 2010 – A regional parody – The most fun news this month was that the Arena Stage’s production of OKLAHOMA! managed to come into the New York spotlight as a rejuvenating production of the show.
EVERYTHING’S UP TO DATE AT THE ARENA, parody of EVERYTHING’S UP TO DATE IN KANSAS CITY from OKLAHOMA!

DECEMBER 2010 – With the political power shifting in Washington in January, here’s our take on Stephen Sondheim’s CHRYSANTHEMUM TEA from PACIFIC OVERTURES
Our “CHRYSANTHEMUM TEA PARTY” (featuring Sarah Palin & Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars)

Thanks if you have to watch any of this,
Fred

Anyone looking for material for holiday season?

If you're looking for material for the holiday season's performances:

Susan Boyle Christmas album parody - Here's THEY MADE YOU OVER, parody of DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER from Susan Boyle's Christmas album - parody sung here by Sheree Sano

A sincere (non-parody) power ballad ANOTHER CHRISTMAS

And because it's so topical for holiday traveling, here's FLY ME IN THE NUDE about the full-body airline scanners

Feel free to use any of these this holiday season.  If you do, all I ask is that you just let me know how the song goes over.

Thanks,
Fred

Cher parody - parody of Gypsies Tramps & Thieves

Cher parody - as she opens in BURLESQUE, Cher's been talking about the surprise of the aches and pains of middle age, but also stays modern with being an active computer communicator with her fans

FLY ME IN THE NUDE update: Airline full-body scanner video: not technically viral, but over 30,000

I'd promised myself this blog wouldn't be mainly about quantity of viewer numbers, but this video is attracting more new people to this blog than all the new recent ones this month, so I hope it's not annoying to old friends that I'm quickly referencing/plugging it again.  (If you've seen it, it's the same one you already saw.)

FLY ME IN THE NUDE - but it's totally suitable for work, G-rated, contains no nudity

Draft of "Chrysanthemum Tea Party" video

Posted this (it's still kind of a draft, unlisted but accessible from here) after seeing Brandy lose to Bristol Palin on "Dancing with the Stars" on Tuesday night, and then the next day seeing reports about an outgoing Rep asking Nancy Pelosi to step aside as Democratic House leader AND Sarah Palin's intimation that she could beat Pres. Obama.

The Wasserstein Prize - now that they're reconsidering, hope it's OK to parody about it!

Here's my parody video take on this, with a hypothetical young female playwright facing being told that no under-32 female playwrights are good enough, and spilling her angst over this into her first play.  :)

Airline "nude" scanners are back in the news - brought this (G-rated) one past 25,000 views

"Fly Me In The Nude" - going though the full-body scanners at Newark Airport.
I'd tried for a visual equivalent to make (very affectionate) fun of what Twyla Tharp did with movement in her Broadway - and now Vegas - Sinatra show, and the video part came out a little too simple for some of the commenters - the visual may not have totally worked, but the parody song has gotten nice reaction!!

OTHER YOUTUBE-VIEWS MILESTONES:

"Another Christmas" my post-Christmas blues song (not a parody)
written several years back passed 40,000 views pretty recently

This one's 2009 news, but people are still finding and watching the
"Appalachian Trail" video
Gov. Mark Sanford CAROLINA parody - it recently passed 133,000

A regional parody-tribute: to the Arena Stage's contemporary take on OKLAHOMA

We're fans in our household of what the Arena Stage strives for and what it accomplishes, so here's a Regional Parody-Tribute -
Parody-tribute of "Kansas City" from OKLAHOMA
EVERYTHING'S UP TO DATE AT THE ARENA

Thanks if you have time to watch (it's about 2 minutes)

Finally found out the simple trick to doing video groupings on YouTube

A varied selection (about 8 songs) of my original non-parody theater songs on YouTube
I finally figured out the simple way to make these groupings on YouTube.  (You just put a unique set of words into the video descriptive info.)  Thanks for whatever you have time to listen to!

Why not give Doris Day the Oscar that Godard doesn't seem to care about?

Whether or not she wants to appear in person, maybe give Doris Day the Oscar that Jean-Luc Godard doesn't seem to want.  (Clearly, they're ready to give it to Godard without his appearing to get it.)

PARODY OF "QUE SERA SERA"
(Jonathan Schwartz radio show referenced, even rhymed, in 3rd verse at 1:18)

For Halloween - Great Theater's Ghosts!

The ghost of Henry Miller about theatre being re-named

And on a much-lower-tech note, the ghost of Alan Jay Lerner hanging out at Vassar watching the ON A CLEAR DAY revisal in its pre-NYC incarnation

Shameless self-promo: I'm a Finalist for 2010 Ebb Award!

I got a phone call from the trustee of the Fred Ebb Foundation, saying that I'm one of the eight "finalists for the Fred Ebb Foundation award."  The odds aren't in my favor for me to win (to paraphrase the great Mr. Ebb's lyric to "Maybe This Time") but whatever happens, being a "finalist" is a thrill in and of itself.

And to Julie Miller, if you're reading this, thanks.  Julie basically picked out which songs I should include on the CD out of the many I gave her to listen to.  (And I only know Julie because of All that Chat, so thanks to All that Chat, too.)

I was wondering whether i should take off some of my Kander-and-Ebb parodies on the net lest someone happen across them while deliberating, but they're so much more tribute-like towards Mr. Ebb and Mr. Kander in their commenting than anything else, so i haven't done anything like that - yet.

Musto's lovely blog item; also gently (?) kidding American Idiot

La Daily Musto in the Village Voice did a blog item all about my Sesame Street parodies on Katy Perry and Elmo.

Please pass this around to anyone who might like the parodies!

Also, I did an AMERICAN IDIOT parody a few days ago, based on the great Billie Joe Armstrong/Green Day song WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS, making very gentle fun (I thought gentle) of Billie Joe joining that cast as the end-of-September doldrums hit.
American Idiot parody link - does this go too far, do you think?

2 Parody minutes: the Katy Perry & Sesame Street flap - so it looks like AVENUE Q was prescient by 7 years!

"Katy Perry & Sesame Street" parody theme song - She Brought "Sex" to Sesame Street

"Rainbow Connection" parody - "Cash Flow Connection" - about how they seem to be capitalizing on whatever the Katy Perry controversy is when appearing on all the talk shows hawking the new season of Sesame Street; when's the last time "everyone" cared about a new Sesame Street season starting?

Celebrating naming a theatre for Sondheim

I got the FOLLIES publishers permission to use Mr. Sondheim's music for this video --

HENRY MILLER'S SONG - LOSING MY SIGN, to tune of LOSING MY MIND

It was also picked up on the course site for an NYU class on History of New York

Please pass the link around if you like it.
