Per my comment made in comment box:  I'm sending my vibes too, trying to remind people how easily Mr. Sanford's mind could drift away. It's not a judgment on someone being in love with someone who's not his wife, more a judgment on being willing to fake out a state with a "story" in the way he did, and then be so easily embraced and trusted all over again!
